01

Whole-of-Nation Proposal & In Operational Service

Launched in April 2021, the S-81 was Commissioned into the Spanish Navy in November 2023. The S-82 has completed more than 1,500 harbor tests and it is about to be floated. The S-83 is being assembled, making the S-80 Class a proven MOTS design.

Our CPSP response represents a “whole of nation” commitment to Canada. A state-owned shipbuilder, the Spanish Navy, and the Spanish government all working together to ensure a strategic partnership between Canada and Spain.

Canada can leverage the existing production line to accelerate and de-risk the CPSP procurement with the delivery of the first operational submarine in 2033 and two additional submarines by  2037.

02

Interoperability & Continuous Capability Insertion

Designed by Navantia with the support of the US Navy (USN) and General Dynamics Electric Boat, the S-80 is fully capable of meeting all of Canada’s operational requirements and employs the most advanced Five Eyes and NATO systems, weapons, and sensors.

The S-80 is a highly automated platform that can be safely operated by a very reduced crew. The Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS) and Integrated Combat System Core (ICSC) are designed for the simple integration of a wide range of NATO weapon systems.

The open architecture of the command and platform management systems enables continuous capability insertion to address obsolescence and the addition of new capabilities.

03

3rd Generation AIP

The S-80 AIP system is the most advanced in the world, enabling the submarine to remain submerged for up to 21 days, increasing lethality and ability to operate under ice.

The AIP system has been rigorously tested, with extensive hours of operation proving the system’s effectiveness and reliability

Navantia’s AIP  system uses bio-ethanol and oxygen to generate hydrogen on demand, enabling the S-80 to refuel in any port, providing both tactical and safety advantages, as well as increased strategic autonomy and deterrence capabilities.

04

Training & Simulation

As the owner of all IP for the training capabilities, Navantia will rapidly transition capabilities to Canada.

The use of NAVANTIS enables the crew to board the boat from shore training and safely operate the submarine at sea.

The Royal Canadian Navy, with support of the Spanish Armada, can begin combined training and sailing aboard the S-81 submarine as early as 2026.

05

A NATO Supply Chain & Proven Track Record of Building Local Defence Capabilities

The S-80 has integrated systems and equipment from world-leading companies across NATO countries with vast experience supplying the submarine industry.

Navantia has a proven track record of delivering on industrial collaboration commitments and will maximize opportunities for Canadian industry in CPSP.

The early integration of Canadian industry in the program will ensure knowledge transfer, strategic partnerships, and strengthened Canadian sovereign naval capabilities.
